East Harlem

Established in 1962 by a family of Greek immigrants, this classic NY slice joint has a rich history that goes beyond its delicious pies. When you visit, you'll learn from the second-generation owner, Constantine, that the concept of pizza actually has its roots in Ancient Greece. The Greeks used to bake a flatbread called "plakous" in mud ovens, topping it with olive oil, herbs, onion, cheese, and garlic. This ancient Greek tradition was later adopted and adapted by the Romans and eventually evolved into the Italian pizza we know and love today. Sam’s Famous Pizza is not just a place to grab a great slice; it's also a window into the cultural heritage and diverse influences that make New York City so unique.
